Ask Questions in Faith

Perhaps it's time to explain why I have titled my blog "Ask Questions in Faith." It all stems from scripture in the New Testament:

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."  —James, chapter 1, verses 5-6

[Upbraideth def: to criticize severely, to find fault with]

I don't know about you, but I feel like I lack wisdom. Like, all the time. Everyday brings a different struggle or challenge, big or small. Each day is an unending path leading from one decision to another choice. Sometimes it feels overwhelming and just downright exhausting.

That's why, for me, this is not just a nice scripture or a good spiritual thought. It's a way of being, of living. I'm not perfect at it, by any means! I'm a constant work in progress. But I know that God cares about our questions and that He's just waiting for us to ask Him, to ask anything at all. He is GOD! It's almost like, "DUH!" Right? Because being God, he is omniscient and omnipresent and omnipotent. In a world of confusion and lies, He is the one constant source of all truth.

Our questions can be as simple as "Where's my daughter's binky?" or as weighty as "What's my purpose in life?" What James teaches us in that scripture is that anyone can ask God, in faith, and the answer will be given to him. The 2 key points are:
  1. ASK, and
  2. HAVE FAITH, unwavering.

The imagery James uses of having faith without wavering is so wonderful, because it explains why asking without faith won't work. Wavering "is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed . . . a double minded man is unstable in all his ways" (James 1:6,8) Wavering, being double minded — it causes instability and uncertainty. Faith does the opposite by stabilizing our focus so that it is directly solely upon God. When that happens God is able to answer us in a way that we can understand, whether through the scriptures, by a thought to our minds, or a feeling in our hearts. Our faith means that we can have confidence in the answer we receive, because we will feel and know that it comes from God.

So if you lack wisdom, ask questions in faith and I promise you will find answers.
